Among the many things that are fleeting:
Time, memory, people, places, objects,
A shirt gone through too many washes,
Your favorite pen stuttering out its last ink,
The phone you have to always replace
When two years have passed by so quickly,
All of life and, suddenly, you're out of college,
And the Jonas Brothers are back together again.
Where did it all go?
But, here is something that is not:
Us, driving down the road, music blaring,
Sunglasses, car karaoke, late night food runs,
Burgers and fries, being cut off by a pickup truck,
Phones dropped into cereal bowls.
Group chat nicknames, memes, heart emojis,
Being prone to injury, running into walls,
Chairs, fridge doors, desks, and each other.
Cooking, watching Hercules, concerts, baseball games,
Our own worship band if only your voice
Didn't drown everyone else's out.
Too many inside jokes to count them all, Laughing until we cried, until it's not funny anymore,
But everything's funnier together.
Keeping balloons off of floors like we're five,
School plans, adulting, collecting mugs and lambs,
Sticky notes in planners, sticky notes everywhere,
Duct tape on the back of your jacket, chipped nails.
Hand gestures, vague noises, pies and cheesecake,
Drinks, the thrum of the club's speakers,
Not being able to even hear yourself think,
The Wobble, one, two, two, running into people
We didn't want to see again from high school.
Break-ups, romance, gossip, Instagram stalking,
Joking about good Christian men when the truth is
We have each other as good Christian women.
The park we'll always have, the city we'll always have,
A family outside of a family, support, frustration,
Kindness, stress, compassion, fear, growth,
Depression, courage, grief, joy, anxiety.
No matter how old I get, how time passes
Or how memory fades and people change,
We will always have this:
Love beyond love, the breath of living water,
The support to walk on it, to not be afraid,
Community to see it flourish and spread,
Prayer, song, encouragement, scripture, and
Sisterhood.
